Europe Callling: Pumice on AI4T

Artificial Intelligence for and by Teachers (AI4T) is an Erasmus+ KA3 project involving the University of Maribor. In many ways, it is similar to our Pumice project. AI4T involves 17 partners, ranging from ministries to universities, who design and evaluate the use of teaching materials that incorporate elements of artificial intelligence.

Since the two projects are so related, we were invited to be included as guests. Accepting the invitation, in early March, Janez Demšar showed 90 mathematics and English teachers how Orange can be used to research Slovenian surnames. The teachers were also invited to participate in a challenge on this topic.

Two weeks later, Tomaž Hočevar took over, showing the teachers how a fairly simple model can be used to learn complex physical laws from data. At his workshop, the participants worked with a spring pendulum, trying to model the swing time as a function of the spring coefficient, the initial extension, and the mass of the weight. This activity will be added to the website shortly. Keep in mind that it is aimed at upper-secondary students who are not afraid of linear combinations, roots, exponential functions, and logarithms.
